The state is claiming that this is being done to cut welfare costs.
The sterilization procedures cost California taxpayers $147,460 between 1997 and 2010.
Dr. James Heinrich, an OB-GYN at Valley State Prison for Women, said, “Over a 10-year period, that isn’t a huge amount of money compared to what you save in welfare paying for these unwanted children – as they procreated more.”
Prison doctors are also purposely lying and coercing prisoners to be sterilized and statistics show that it is also racially motivated.
A majority of the women who are sterilized in prison are of Mexican decent.
Despite these disturbing facts, it is legal to sterilize women in California prisons. Between 2005 and 2013, at least 149 inmates were sterilized. The 39 mentioned above are confirmed cases of illegal sterilization, but I wouldn’t be surprised it that figure rises.
